chapter 6 be here...poor haven lol...

Chapter 6.
Aftermath.
The man picked through the rubble of his city, looking for anything that could sustain him for another day. The horror of the past few days had been indescribable, tearing apart his soul the more he thought about it. His family, his home, his life…shattered, shattered by those bastards who were without honour or mercy. The gravitons had obliterated everything, and he had watched from the mountains overlooking his town with terror. Now he found himself among the wreck of Havens once proud and mighty capital city, a city that not witnessed a successful attack in centuries.
The man looked up into the sky in desperation, and saw yet more of the horror that was to come.

Above Haven.
Energy weapons blasted and ships exploded as a huge battle took place over the scarred capital of the UEA. After Havens energy grid became effectively wiped out, almost all of the planetary defences became useless, a weakness Korvath took little time in exposing. In three days they readied an invasion force, and shipped out to take over the planet once and for all. The UEA was fighting back fiercely, however, it wasn’t going to give up its power centre just yet. The mighty defence fleet tore into the invading Korvath force, and attacked with everything they had to defend the planet below.
The Behemoths devastating, yet ingenious attack on Haven had proven highly effective. A 4000km crater had been punched into the surface of the ice world, and a fierce wall of magma had escaped from its rocky prison, to spill over the surface for hundreds more kilometres. In all, over a quarter of Havens surface had become ruined and uninhabitable, and caused the death of billions of its citizens. Even with the latest in terraformer technology, this was going to take years to repair. The psychological damage, however, would take far longer to heal. And now, a gigantic fight was raging for the planets freedom itself. And the UEA was losing. The small defence force had suffered over the years, thanks to the trust placed in the enormous planetary defence network on the surface, and now it was showing just how badly maintained it was; over dependant on fighters and cruisers, and being battered from every angle.
The cries of thousands of UEA pilots and officers cried out over the fleet communication network, as the fleet slowly descended deeper and deeper into chaos.
‘Where’s our backup? We’re taking heavy fire!’ ‘We need assistance, help us!’ ‘Cruiser wing 4 just went up in smoke!’ The UEA fleet shrank and shrank, as the sheer, brutal force exacted by the Korvath invaders took its toll. A great cheer went up as the last UEA ship, a cruiser, exploded in a crimson fireball. The Korvathians stopped cheering after a few seconds, then turned their attention to the ruined planet below. The crater and the magma caused by the graviton attack was visible from orbit, an angry orange eye on a snowy blue face.
The fleet commander, gleeful in victory, opened a channel to Haven. He was met with complete silence, partly because of their being very little power on the surface, and partly because the people weren’t ready to surrender just yet.
‘Citizens of planet Haven, I am Commander Jaskia of the 43rd Korvath Imperial Fleet. We have destroyed your pitiful defensive fleet and disabled your planetary defences. As we knew we would be, we are victorious over you.’ Still there was silence. Jaskia grinned, the feeling of power he had over this once-mighty planet was indescribable. He would enjoy slowly sapping the will of the subjugated citizens, gradually wearing them down to become complacent and obedient.
He spoke again. ‘You have two choices. Either you surrender completely, immediately and unconditionally, and join our struggle for glory against our ancient enemy. Or, if you choose to remain defiant, I will give the order to bomb the remaining surface of your planet into oblivion until you do. Your choice. You have one minute.’ Jaskia cut off, and sat back in his chair with a contented sigh. This was going to be interesting. 10 seconds passed, no surrender. 20 seconds, no surrender. 30...40...50...60. Time was up, and still whoever was the leader on the planet had not surrendered.
Jaskia, barely able to contain his excitement, ordered all bomber craft to fly to the surface, and bomb them into submission. He watched, satisfied, as they streaked down to carry out their orders. A series of blue-green explosion flashed out from beneath the clouds, as plasma shells were dropped by the hundreds. The explosions were centred around cities and other population areas, causing as much damage and death as was possible. After just 5 minutes of the terrible attacks, a communication came through from the stricken planet. A human appeared on the screen, ruffled and obviously furious, but keeping it under tight control. Through gritted teeth he spoke. ‘Is there any chance of you stopping these bombing runs?’
‘Surrender, and they will stop straight away,’ said Jaskia simply. The human was clearly dealing with some very powerful emotions as he spoke again, this time almost spitting out the words.
‘Very well, we surrender to your forces.’ Jaskia faked a gasp of shock.
‘You mean , Haven, capital planet of the UEA, surrenders to the Korvath Empire?’
‘Yes’. the human was looking murderous. Jaskia smiled widely.
‘We accept your surrender, human. I am glad you chose to join our struggle against the evil of humanity.’ Jaskia closed the communication before the human could respond, then chuckled slightly to himself. The helmsman next to him spoke. ‘Shall I stop the bombing, sir?’ Jaskia’s smile widened even more.
‘Keep it up for a few more minutes. Just to be sure.’

UEA Temporary Central Headquarters, planet Arc.

The fallout from the attack on Haven, and its surrender a few days later, didn’t sink in properly for the galaxy until the week following the events. Widespread shock and panic came first, as planets went into a frenzy of ships and defence building, then came the economic strain because of such panicked building. Slowly, as the days went on, people began to come to terms with the fact that Haven, the nerve centre of the United Empires Alliance, had been captured by their eternal enemy.
The war against Korvath, which had been going so well for the UEA, had now completely been upended, and suddenly nothing seemed certain anymore. UEA action in Andromeda had slowed down, because of both loss of morale, and the need for ships back at home to secure the other vital words of the UEA.
Now, the headquarters had been moved to planet Arc, and the job of sorting out the mess caused by Korvath had begun. Vice President Chimera had been stunned to hear of the attack on Haven, he didn’t think it was possible to inflict so much damage on such a powerful world. All the times he had launched attacks on the planet, only to be frustrated to hear of failure… things were different now though. Their new enemy had acted in a cowardly and spineless manner, a manner in which he would never of adopted. Now, he was leading a council of war in the former imperial senate chamber, seated with his Admirals and President Pendragon as they hammered out a contingency plan.
Pendragon looked crestfallen, the way he had been for the past few days. The shock of his capital planet, where he usually lived, being victim to such a devastating attack was having a huge impact on the man. He sat mostly in silence, while the central government decided on what course of action to take next. Admiral Firehawk had already suggested an assault on the planet, to retake it. This had been thrown out of the window, however, when it was pointed out Korvath had enough ships in orbit to peel the crust of the planet away from the mantle, and wouldn’t hesitate to blast Haven into oblivion in the event of an attack.
Korvath had gained a fantastic bargaining tool. So far, they had demanded the withdrawal of all UEA ships from the Haven system, and had managed to force almost a million humans into cargo ships, to be ferried to the Andromeda galaxy to work in mines and factories for the Korvath empire. All in all, the last few days had been the UEA’s darkest. Chimera drummed his fingers moodily on the MetaGlass topped table.
Admiral Valkyrus just sat there, staring into space. The regret he felt was insurmountable, and he was doing everything he could to help soften his terrible mistake. The Jericho was moored in orbit over Arc, and was undergoing a refit to ensure the Graviton attack could not be repeated. Chimera glanced at the slouching man, feeling a mix of compassion and pity for the Admiral. He felt no blame towards him, he could not have known the plan of the Korvath attack.
Chimera sighed, utterly at a loss. In one week, the war against Korvath had taken a terrible turn for the worse, it had now become a proper fight, against an enemy that had finally shown its teeth when cornered. They would need something incredible to win this war now, or Haven, and the entire galaxy, would be lost forever.

chapter 7, here we go, hope you like the unexpected twist...

Chapter 7.
Stagnation.

Five Years Later.
The grime-slicked hull of the Soul Ripper cruised through the darkness of space, silent as a panther. The scars of the last 5 years of battles and narrow escapes were proudly worn on the mighty battlestation’s hull. Things had changed greatly in the galaxy, and the UEA had managed to repel the relentless Horvath assaults and incursions, but to a grave cost to itself. Over a million ships had been lost, and billions had died. Just like the last war, thought Mourwen bitterly.

Haven was still under Korvath rule, barely. Repeated strikes by the UEA over the following months had left a tiny defence fleet in orbit over the scarred world. The crater made by the graviton attack was mostly gone, thanks to terraforming efforts by the occupying force. The crust had mostly been repaired, though the area was still subject to devastating earthquakes. The planet would take centuries to fully recover. The UEA, however, had lost the will to fight on any more. At least for Haven…

The war had reached a stalemate. Korvath would take a star system, then the UEA would take a system in the Andromeda galaxy. It was disturbingly reminiscent of the war between the Archangel Alliance and the Chimerean Empire, six years ago. Only this time, the stakes were much higher.

Mourwen, like the rest of her crew, was grimy and unkempt, time for self grooming taking a backseat to survival and strategy. She had bore witness to battles the size of which she barely thought possible, tens of thousands of ships thrown together like so many toys. Just this week, an 80,000 strong Korvath armada, bent on the subjugation of Arc, had been met with 250,000 UEA starships, the largest fleet yet massed by either side. The Korvath side had been swiftly slaughtered as they were battered by ships and defences. And yet, just last month, an enormous assault on the capital planet of the Korvath Empire had failed spectacularly, resulting in the loss of almost 60,000 ships. Stalemate.

Now, the Soul Ripper had been charged with a vital mission. It was to destroy a vital shipbuilding facility of the Korvath in the Milky Way galaxy, a plant that pumped out 40 ships a week on average. Its loss would be crippling to the occupying force in this region of the galaxy, and would bring about a significant victory for the UEA. The Soul Ripper moved closer, its 1000km shape crawling towards the shipyard at over 1400m/s. the deadly weapons on the vessel roared to life, 100,000 turrets, lasers and cannons aimed at their target. Mourwen raised a fist, preparing to give the order to begin firing. However, she was well accustomed to the behaviour of the Korvath by now, and they didn’t disappoint. All at once, hundreds of Korvath ships decloaked, revealing their emerald forms to the eyes of the Soul Rippers’s crew. Mourwen grinned briefly, then barked an order. ‘All UEA ships, decloak now, and engage the enemy!’ 1000 UEA starships decloaked next to the DeathStar, and rushed at the Korvath ships with unrivalled fury. In the 5 years following Haven’s capture, a few important tricks had been learnt from the Korvath, the cloaking device among the most useful. Their tactic had only been turned against them a few times before, so the fleet was taken by surprise at first. They soon found their footing, however, and began their stylistic, flourishing way of battle that Mourwen always found amusing. Such a wasteful use of time and resources, she mused to herself.

They were heavily outnumbered, however, and the Soul Ripper carved through them like a laser through paper. Soon the fleet became just another debris field, floating in space, dancing on the solar winds. The Soul Ripper advanced, and opened fire on the defenceless shipyard. Huge chunks of the facility were blasted off and melted by the barrage from the fleet, and before long, a twisted lump of metal and deuterium was all that was left of the shipyard. Recycler ships scooted out of the Soul Ripper, and began using de-atomizer beams to reduce the debris from the Korvath ships, and the shipyard, to raw metal and deuterium ore that could be used for the war effort. Mourwen allowed her bridge crew a short celebration, then filed a report to the Headquarters on Arc. Mission complete.

*****

UEA Central Headquarters, Arc.

Chimera was having another rage. In days gone by, he was infamous for them, but after the inception of the UEA he seemed to calm down considerably. In the last few months, however, they had flared up again, causing the blood pressure of every HQ staff member to rise. Admiral Valkyrus had outdone himself this time, causing the power systems of an entire planet to fail, with an order he had drunkenly given. The man had been spiralling out of control in recent years, and everyone in the galaxy knew why. His guilt he felt at the devastating loss of life and military assets he had partially been responsible for was incomprehensible, and he had turned to the bottle to try to ease his pain.

Now, Chimera stood in the same room as the man, yelling about how he was neglecting his duty, and to grow some spine, for God’s sake. Valkyrus listened moodily to the entire monologue in stony silence, then, when the Vice President had finished, fixed the man with his red-rimmed eyes, and spoke harshly.
‘Do you now what its like to kill, sir?’ he asked in a voice that reeked of misery. Chimera was taken aback by the sudden, unexpected question, and sat down opposite the once-great man to ponder it. In his 15 years in government, he had not once been directly responsible for the death of someone.
Sure, he had given orders to kill, and signed the death warrants of countless war criminals and spies, but never had he actually killed a person.

Valkyrus scoffed as a reply. Then he spoke again, in that same terrible voice.
‘Do you know, do you have any inkling of an idea, of what its like to be responsible for over 3 billion deaths of my own people, as a result of my own short-sightedness and cowardice?’ He leaned closer, and Chimera caught a whiff of Syphiryx whiskey on his breath. He had not aged well in the last few years, his stubble made him look much older.
‘Shall I tell you?’ Then carried on without an answer. ‘It’s the most horrifying, soul crushing thing you can have happen to you. The chasm you feel in your heart, the misery it brings you…nothing compares to it. I will be haunted by what I did that day…forever. And it was all to protect my crew, my ship…and instead, I allowed those BASTARDS, to attack, devastate, and take over my home. It was all my fault, and I can NEVER repair what I did.’ He took a swig of whiskey, an action Chimera didn’t try to stop. It would just make him violent.
Instead, he just looked at Valkyrus in the eyes, and spoke as gently as he could.
‘You were one of my best Admirals, Valkyrus. The fact that you made a mistake that day, what happened to Haven…it wasn’t your fault. You couldn’t have known their plan, all you were doing was trying to protect your crew, and your fleet, from harm. They preyed on that.’

Valkyrus just scoffed again, took another swig of whiskey, then stood up, and staggered out of Chimera’s office. At the door, he turned to face the Vice President. A single tear made its way down his cheek, as he said one last thing.

‘3 billion, Chimera. See if you can count to that.’ Then he was gone, leaving Chimera sitting at his desk, feeling almost as lonely as the fallen man he had just confronted. With a scowl, he thought of all the terrible things that had happened in the past few years, all of them caused by Korvath.

I swear, one day, I’ll make them pay for what they’ve done, he thought darkly.

I’ll make them pay.
